After chatting a bit about Ron’s initial introduction into the banking industry, mostly from his father’s development of a relationship with a banker in Hawaii. The banker happened to be an old college roommate who had risen to a prominent position in one of the largest banks on Hawaii (and the world) which led to his father launching an equipment financing company.
In recent years there has been a huge growth toward digital banking and much less personal interaction. Of course when many locations are available with ATMs and small branch location in many supermarkets, the relationship with top tier management has fallen to the wayside. Ron reveals that BBVA-Compass has done much work to change that, bringing the old silo-driven style of banking services into a new business model of single-contact for a variety of services. Small business loans to cover business ideas or starting a small business are included.
Small business owners often need short-term financing for various reasons. If you’ve been in that situation, you know the challenges that can develop. Building relationships has always been a key factor in developing banking resources. Ron says that with the new model, largely a product of BBVA’s business model, the culture of banking is changing.
